The $300 "systems" with a DVD player built into a thin receiver are usually only good for 1 thing - playing DVD's on their internal DVD player.
They usually will not let you hook up a BluRay, HD cable box, Game system except perhaps with stereo cables.
A modest Home Theater runs about $600-$800.
This includes a AV receiver from yamaha, Denon, Onkyo
A set of 5 monitor style speakers and a sub from real speaker companies like polk, definitive, energy, etc.
BEFORE YOU BUY A SYSTEM:
Look at the system and decide how to hook up these 3 common additional devices:
- HD Cable or Sat box (needs a 5.1 input)
- BluRay player (needs a 5.1 or HDMI input)
- Game system (PS3 or xBox - another 5.1 input)
If you cannot hook these 3 devices up - do not buy the system.

Oh, I've seen 'em as low as $100-$200, but they won't provide the
performance worthy of such a nice television. Here's what I would
recommend that will at the very least put you on the right road...
You will no doubt want to get a 5.1 surround speaker system with a
healthy powered subwoofer, a surround sound receiver, and a Blu-Ray
Disc player, or at the very least an upconverting DVD player.
As for speaker systems...
Under $500: Dayton Audio HTS1200
$500-$2,500: Hsu Research starting w/their Performance 2 system
Under $2,500-$5,000: Silverline Minuet 2 pair (or if you would rather
have floor speakers so you don't have to purchase speaker stands,
their Prelude is a superb choice) and a dedicated Minuet center with
an Hsu powered sub appropriate for your size of room
As for the audio components, I like Arcam (FMJ first, then DiVA
second) first, then Pioneer Elite, then Onkyo (for the receiver, not the
optical disc player). If you want to stick with Sony products for the
electronics (so you can use the Sony remote to control everything),
make sure you choose Sony ES over the regular Sony
gear for much better performance as well as better build quality.
Happy home theater-ing!
