You can get away with cheap/less-accurate speakers for home theater. This is why some people buy the crappy ‘systems’ – and they seem to be happy with them.
You do not need lots of power because you surround a few chairs with an array of speakers and are not trying to mimic a concert-hall in the next room like some people do with music.
THE DOWN SIDE
We get lots of whiny people asking “How do I hook up my PS3/BluRay/HD Cable box/HD Sat box to my system..” and they dont realize that the $399 el-crappo system they bought only has stereo inputs – you cannot get 5.1 sound from anything but the built-in DVD player.
My advice:
- Get a separate AV receiver with lots of spare inputs. The Onkyo TX-SR units are very good for modest prices
- Get speakers from ‘real’ speaker companies. Nothing from Sony, Samsung, Philips, or even Onkyo count
- Get a separate, self-powered subwoofer. Later you can upgrade this to create smooth, impressive bass (which is one of the subtle secrets to home theater).
Then you add on your BluRay/PS3/…. sources.
this answer totally depends on your setup. For example, if you have a HDTV (real one) and a blu-ray player, the Onkyo 606 is great. But, if you have a regular TV with a standard DVD player, get the Sony HTIB because its cheaper and you are not processing HD video or sound.
I had Sony HTIB with my regular TV/DVD setup, it was good. Now I have DLP, blu-ray player, and an Onkyo 604 (they dont make it anymore, buy the Onkyo 606). For speakers, I dont know how Onkyo are, but I know their receivers are solid! Denon are very solid too! But it all depends on your setup.
Between Onkyo and Sony there is no real comparison. Onkyo is far superior to Sony until you get to their high end ES line. I have owned both and the Onkyo is much better than the Sony stuff throughout the product line. I currently have an Onkyo 805 receiver. It weighs about 55lbs and puts out 130 watts per channel. It decodes all of the latest codecs for surround sound audio also. If you don’t want to spend as much as I did go with the 5 or 6 series Onkyo’s. Spend the money on your receiver. You can buy a cheaper set of matched speakers that will still sound great with a quality receiver. The best speakers in the world will still sound poor if the receiver doesn’t have enough watts or is poor in quality.
