Before the hdmi im guessing you used either the component or composite cables (red, green, blue or red, white yellow) from the xbox to the receiver then to the tv (xbox>receiver>tv) then you switched from xbox to tv with hdmi (xbox>tv) correct?
you have to use the red and white cables that are connected to the AV cables if you want to get the sound from you xbox to the receiver (xbox [sound]>receiver) by connecting both the AV cables and the HDMI cord together (you can achieve this by breaking off the shell of the AV cables where it plugs into the xbox so theres room or buying this http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360… )
and make sure the AV cable is switch from TV to HDTV (the side switch on the base of the AV cables) so that the video source comes out of the HDMI slot
if this isn't what you needed then sorry I wasted your time, good luck
