Good in terms of looks, bad in terms of sound quality.
These systems are built and sold for their looks, not their sound quality. For example, though they often are sold for over $1000, many of their components are no better (and often worse) than those found in systems costing less than $300. For example, here is an inside look at the components of a 1993 Bose Lifestyle System (no idea what model):http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthr…
The woofer looks to be approximately of the same quality as woofers sold at Parts Express for $40 or less, and I have seen speakers inside computer speaker systems that are of higher quality than those in the Lifestyle system’s 5 surround speakers.
As such, the sound quality will be, at best, great for casual listening and better than your TV’s built-in speakers, and at worse it won’t even sound as good as some systems costing $200 or less.
Now onto the other areas. Bose does make these things reasonably easy to set up, and they do blend in well without hogging space (hence the name “Lifestyle” systems).
In summary, with the current price being what it is, they aren’t even worth it for the aesthetics, but if you can find them for under, say, $300, then they’d be a decent aesthetic choice and a good upgrade from a TV’s built-in speakers.
