You should for sure use HDMI. The thing is that your surround sound needs to HDMI in and output.
Basically Xbox HDMI to Surround -Surround HDMI to TV. If your surround does not have an in and output try your old configuration using HDMI to the TV but I don't know if xbox can simultaneously send audio via HDMI and analog. good luck

HDMI should carry the surround sound audio signal to the tv. Look for a tv with optical audio output (or whatever type your surround sound unit can take); then whatever you have on the tv can be heard in surround sound.
