They change every year, something that someone on here has, is probably no longer made. Pick an amount of $$, then go to Circuit City or equivalent and use your ears to determine the best sound. Bring an audio disc that you are familiar with, to try it out.

Well girl circuit city has a surround sound system by Onkyo. Its 7.1 its pretty good its like $499.It has 1000watts of sound.I got an Onkyo system and i like it.It gets really loud while watching movies. The only thing it did not come with was a DVD player. So i recommend you buy a DVD player that has up-conversion.Lg,Samsung and Sony got some.So check them out.Well worst case scenario he can return it.

I have an Onkyo HT-S780. It is a 7.1 speaker setup and it sounds pretty good. If 7.1 is too much than you can hook it up in 5.1 also. I paid $350 for it a year ago from Circuit City. IMHO it sounds just as good if not better than some HTiB's that cost $1000. You can hook up your tv, dvd, vcr, xbox, ps2/3, mp3 player, etc. to it. This is the version without a dvd player included, but the next step up does include one.
One of the things I like about this system is that I can upgrade my speakers, which I have been doing slowly. The system comes with 18 guage wire (pretty small) so I have also upgraded to a Monster subwoofer cable and 12 guage speaker wire which does provide better audio quality.
We have an 15' by 22' living room and this system does a great job of filling it. It supports the most common sound formats like Dolby Digital EX, DTS (Discrete ES), Pro-Logic IIx, etc. which will produce excellent sound from all his favorite movies.
This system definitely isn't the crappy $100 version and certainly doesn't cost $1000. I speak of this particular system because I own it and I know it sounds great for the price. Other good HTiB's to look at would be Yamaha, Denon and Pioneer. Good Luck!
